ScannerScanners enable users to 'scan' the market, be it stocks, options, currencies etc., to identify investment opportunities that meet a user's specific investment criteria. Using a technical analysis scanner, a user could, for example, scan the market to identify oversold stocks that have stochastic and RSI value of less than 20% and 30 respectively.Alerts Alert software is used to monitor specific equities, such as stocks, options, currencies, warrants, etc., and provide a notification of when specific price, volume and technical analysis investment conditions are met. As an example, a person who uses technical analysis might want to be notified when the RSI indicator rises above 70, followed by the price falling below its 20 day moving average; using alerting software the user will be able to create an alert, which will provide a notification of when the technical analysis investment conditions are met. When alert conditions are met, a notification is typically communicated via an on screen pop up or sent as an email, instant message or text alert (to a mobile phone).
Custom indicatorsMost technical analysis software includes a library of de-facto standard indicators (e.g. moving averages and MACD). Some software will also provide a mean to customize, combine or create new indicators. This is typically achieved with a proprietary scripting or graphical language.Data feedTechnical analysis software is typically used with end of day (EOD), delayed or real time data feeds. EOD data feeds provide the end of day closing price for the given equity and is typically updated once a day at market close. Delayed data is typically delayed 15 to 30 minutes depending on the exchange and is the most commonly used data feed type.[citation needed] Real time data feeds provide tick by tick 'real time' data. Real time data is licensed on a per-exchange basis whereas delayed data is typically purchased on a regional basis, such as US markets, rather than an exchange basis.Broker interfaceSome technical analysis software can be integrated with brokerage platforms to enable traders to place trades via a user interface that they are familiar with. Typically these software providers try to differentiate themselves from the brokerage software through enhanced features such as automated trading.PlatformsTechnical analysis software is available in the form of commercial or open source software. Such software may be available on a computer, or on a mobile phone or personal digital assistant (PDA). Mobile phones and PDAs allow a user to access online technical analysis packages when away from their computer. However, packages that require the use of Java applets may not work on older model mobile phones or PDAs. Online technical analysis software packages provide access from any Internet-connected computer (including a suitably equipped mobile or PDA), but may require the user to store their information with the provider. Installed, downloaded software will only be available on the computers that the user has downloaded and installed it on.

Electronic trading platformFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: navigation, search
an Electronic Trading Platform being used at the Deutsche BörseIn finance, an Electronic trading platform is a computer system that can be used to place orders for financial products over a network with a financial intermediary. This includes products such as shares, bonds, currencies, commodities and derivatives with a financial intermediary, such as a brokers, market makers, Investment banks or stock exchanges. Such platforms allow electronic trading to be carried out by users from any location and are in contrast to traditional floor trading using open outcry and telephone based trading.
Electronic trading platforms typically stream live market prices on which users can trade and may provide additional trading tools, such as charting packages, news feeds and account management functions. Some platforms have been specifically designed to allow individuals to gain access to financial markets that could traditionally only be accessed by specialist trading firms such as allowing margin trading on forex and derivatives such as contract for difference. They may also be designed to automatically trade specific strategies based on technical analysis or to do high-frequency trading.

Direct access trading is a technology which allows stock traders to trade directly with market makers or specialists, rather than trading through stock brokers.[1]
Direct access trading systems use front-end trading software and high-speed computer links to stock exchanges such as NASDAQ, NYSE and the various electronic communication networks. Direct access trading system transactions are executed in a fraction of a second and their confirmations are instantly displayed on the trader's computer screen. This is in contrast to a typical conventional online trader who requires seconds or minutes to execute a trade.
Most direct-access firms charge commissions based on your trading volume, usually in terms of calendar months. Increased trading activity reduces commission for each trade. It can be as cheap as you can trade by 1 point or pip difference, in that it is a must for scalpers.
Unlike traditional online brokerages, direct-access brokerages usually pass through the exchange fees involved in trading to customers. Examples are specialist fees, Electronic Communications Networks fees, exchange modify and cancel fees, clearing fees, regulatory fees etc. Commissions are generally on a per share basis and typically around 0.005 USD per share. For example, the commission would be $8 for a 1000 share transaction at $0.008 per share.
Some firms set fee schedules instead of passing exchange fees on directly. This improves the transparency of fee administration. For example, you do not need to change the charge any time there is a change in the exchange fees. Some fees may be complex to calculate or variable. It is not easy to write them on the fee schedules.

Who uses direct access trading?Direct access trading is primarily for self-helped and active traders who value speed of execution and try hard to minimize costs and slippage. Also they get to take care of themselves and make trade decisions on their own (without the help of brokers or advisors). These people typically include:
1.day traders - they trade a lot per trading day. Direct access brokers can give them front-end trading software and platforms and offer deep discounts on commissions and brokerage fees.
2.scalpers - they trade in a large volume for small gains. Slow execution may kill profits, and even incur losses.
3.momentum (event-based) traders - their trading decisions based on news or incidents happened in normal trading days. When the news breaks out, the market will usually become very volatile. They need lightning fast execution to enable them to grasp these opportunities; the difference between success or failure may be determined in just a second. A delay of seconds to minutes, as is common in traditional online trading, would therefore not be acceptable to such traders.
4.momentum (technical-based) day or swing traders - they trade on high momentum stocks, in which it has high volatility. They need their orders executed lightning fast, and may need to get out quickly if the market goes against them.
Direct access trading is not typically for:
1.(long-term) investors - slippage is important to frequent traders, but it amounts to only a dollar or so for each trade. They hold a position for a long time. Each trade may earn them substantial profits to cover those small slippage losses. Some direct-access brokers charge inactivity and platform fees. These costs may not justify direct access trading for long-term investors.
2.novice traders - Direct-access trading typically requires experience and knowledge.
3.inactive traders

Text courtesy of Wikepedia creative Commons. How scalping works Scalpers attempt to act like traditional market makers or specialists. To make the spread means to buy at the Bid price and sell at the Ask price, in order to gain the bid/ask difference. This procedure allows for profit even when the bid and ask don't move at all, as long as there are traders who are willing to take market prices. It normally involves establishing and liquidating a position quickly, usually within minutes or even seconds. The role of a scalper is actually the role of market makers or specialists who are to maintain the liquidity and order flow of a product of a market.PrinciplesSpreads are bonuses as well as costs - Most worldwide markets operate on a bid and ask based system. The numerical difference between the bid and ask prices is referred to as the spread between them. The ask prices are immediate execution (market) prices for quick buyers (ask takers); bid prices for quick sellers (bid takers). If a trade is executed at market prices, closing that trade immediately without queuing would not get you back the amount paid because of the bid/ask difference. The spread can be viewed as trading bonuses or costs according to different parties and different strategies. On one hand, traders who do NOT wish to queue their order, instead paying the market price, pay the spreads (costs). On the other hand, traders who wish to queue and wait for execution receive the spreads (bonuses). Some day trading strategies attempt to capture the spread as additional, or even the only, profits for successful trades.
Lower exposure, lower risks - Scalpers are only exposed in a relatively short period, as they do not hold positions overnight. As the period one holds decreases, the chances of running into extreme adverse movements, causing huge losses, decreases.
Smaller moves, easier to obtain - A change in price results from imbalance of buying and selling powers. Most of the time within a day, prices stay stable, moving within a small range. This means neither buying nor selling power control the situation. There are only a few times which price moves towards one direction, i.e. either buying or selling power controls the situation. It requires bigger imbalances for bigger price changes. It is what scalpers look for - capturing smaller moves which happen most of the time, as opposed to larger ones.
Large volume, adding profits up - Since the profit obtained per share or contract is very small due to its target of spread, they need to trade large in order to add up the profits. Scalping is not suitable for large-capital traders seeking to move large volumes at once, but for small-capital traders seeking to move smaller volumes more often.
[edit] Different parties and spreadsWhenever the spread is made one (or more) party must pay it (paying the cost to receive some value on completing the transaction quickly) and some party (or parties) will receive that money as profit.Who pays the spreads (costs)The following traders pay the spreads:Momentum traders on technicals - These traders look for fast movements hinted from quotes, prices and volumes, charts. When a real breakout occurs, price becomes volatile. A sudden rise or fall may occur within any second. They need to get in quick before the price moves out of the base.
Momentum traders on news - When news breaks out, the price becomes very volatile as many people watching the news will react at more or less the same time. A trader needs to take the market prices immediately as the opportunity may vanish after a second or so.Cut losses on market prices - The spread becomes a cost if the price moves against the expected direction and the trader wishes to cut losses immediately on market price.Who receives the spreads (bonuses)The following traders receive the spreads:Individual scalpers - obviously they trade for spreads and can benefit from larger spreads.Market makers and specialists - people who provide liquidity place their orders on their market books. Over the course of a single day, a market maker may fill orders for hundreds of thousands or millions of shares.

It is not easy to write them on the fee schedules.
[edit] Platform or software feeSome firms do not charge their clients a platform fee. Instead, they provide a lower-end, less-featured electronic trading platform to minimize their costs. More complex systems are offered as an upgrade option, but come with monthly fees. Costs can be recovered elsewhere, including hidden fees, or giving a client significantly less interest for cash balances.
Some firms have platform or software fees which cover firms' costs of developing, using and maintaining their proprietary trading software or platforms. The charge can be somewhere between $50 to $300 per calendar month. However, most firms will waive the fee if you trade up to a specific volume per calendar month.
[edit] Account minimumsThere are usually 2 types of minimums to open a direct-access account.
The first one is balance minimums. This could be several thousands in USD. Different types of accounts may have different requirements. More deposits are required if one engages in pattern day trading according to United States regulations.
The second one is activity minimums. Some firms charge inactivity fees if a minimum monthly trading volume has not been met. Many firms will deduct transaction fees and commission paid each month from that month's inactivity fee. Hence an activity fee often serves as a minimum monthly commission which is paid to the brokerage. However, not all direct access trading brokerages charge an inactivity fee.

The following are the most common features of technical analysis applications. Some software may focus on only one aspect (say back testing) and the combination of more than one software package is often required to build a fully automated trading system.
ChartingA graphical interface that presents price, volume and technical analysis indicators through a variety of visual interfaces such as line, bar, candlestick and open-high-low-close (OHLC) charts. The chart data is presented as a time series and users typically have the ability to view historical data with varying interval (sampling) periods. Interval periods range from seconds through to months; short term traders tend to use frequent interval periods, such as 1 minute i.e. the price data is updated every 1 minute, whereas longer term traders tend to use daily, weekly or monthly interval periods when trying to identify price and technical analysis trends. Some charting packages enable users to draw support and resistance trend line or for example Fibonacci retracements to help establish trending patterns.Back testingEnables traders to test technical analysis investment timing strategies against historical price movement for one or more specific securities. Strategies are compared to each other using diverse performance measurements such as maximum drawdown, annual profit and Sharpe ratio. The objective is to try and develop a trading strategy based on technical analysis indicator criteria, which will generate a positive return. This concept was computerized and introduced to traders by Louis B. Mendelsohn in 1983 with his ProfitTaker Futures Trading Software (see August 2010 issue of Stocks, Futures & Options Magazine).
OptimizationA process of testing technical analysis indicator parameters, with the view to developing an investment strategy that generates the maximum return based on historical price movement. The optimization process is achieved through the fine-tuning of the associated technical analysis charting parameters. Typically technical analysis indicators have a range of parameters that can be adjusted, such as the interval period and the technical analysis indicator variables. For example the stochastic indicator has four parameters that effect its results: %k, %d, slowing period, interval period. Optimization must be performed carefully to avoid curve fitting. Back testing of an over-optimized system will perform real-time. One way to diminish over-optimization is by carrying out optimization on historical data and then performing future testing (sometimes referred to as 'out of sample') before making a final evaluation of a trading strategy.ScannerScanners enable users to 'scan' the market, be it stocks, options, currencies etc., to identify investment opportunities that meet a user's specific investment criteria. [edit] EtymologyThe term 'trading platform' is generally used to avoid confusion with ‘trading system’ which is more often associated with the trading method or strategy rather than the computer system used to execute orders within financial circles.[1]
[edit] Historic developmentThe first electronic trading platforms were typically associated with stock exchanges and allowed brokers to place orders remotely using private dedicated networks and dumb terminals. Early systems would not always provide live streaming prices and instead allowed brokers or clients to place an order which would be confirmed some time later, these were known as 'request for quote' based systems.
Trading systems evolved to allow for live streaming prices and near instant execution of orders as well as using the internet as the underlying network meaning that location became much less relevant. Some electronic trading platforms have built in scripting tools and even APIs allowing traders to develop automatic or algorithmic trading systems and robots, which have been used by high frequency traders.
The client graphical user interface of the electronic trading platforms can be used to trade currencies, equities, future, or options and are also sometimes called trading turrets (this may be true, but is probably a misues of the term, as trading turret refers to the specialized phone appliance used by traders).

Types of softwareDay trading software falls into three main categories: Data, Charting, and Trade Execution.
[edit] DataA day trader needs to know the prices of the stocks, futures, or currencies that s/he wants to trade. In the case of stocks and futures, those prices come from the exchange where they are traded. Forex is a little different as there is no central exchange.
Because exchanges don't generally want to be concerning themselves with supplying data to millions of individuals, they usually make their price feed available to an aggregation company. These companies then sell those price feeds on to individuals and corporations.
Prices can vary greatly for data feeds, with the exchange setting the base price.
Some data feeds are free, but the prices these feeds supply are delayed. Such feeds are only useful to occasional investors, and are worthless to day traders.
[edit] ChartingThe vast majority of day traders will chart prices in some kind of charting software. Many charting vendors also supply data feeds.
Charting packages all tend to offer the same basic technical analysis indicators. Advanced packages often include a complete programming language for creating more indicators, or testing different trading strategies.
[edit] Trade ExecutionOnce a trader has their data and can see and analyze it on a chart, they will at some point want to place a trade. To do so, they need to use some kind of trade execution software.
Most brokers will provide proprietary software linked directly to their in house systems, but many third party applications exist through Independent software vendors(ISV). The advantage of third party programs is that they allow the trader to trade through different brokers whilst retaining the same interface. They may also offer a number of advanced features such as automatic trade execution.

Mom & Pop Traders Can Now Compete With Their Larger Cousins By
Using These Components:
Order Flow Monitor - Order Flow Monitor plots specific ‘events’ that
occur within the Order Flow of both the electronic futures markets
and equity markets which have the capacity to move the market.
WOW Index [Weiss Order Weighted Index] - The WOW Index
determines the dominate direction within the Order Flow of the S&P
500 e-Mini.  The WOW Index allows traders to align their trades with
the institutional, hedge fund, quant shop, and prop desk order flow
that is the primary determinant of price direction.  The WOW Index
is the handiest tool that a trader can leverage to readily allow them
to go with the flow and to never 'fight the tape'.
MacDaddy - MacDaddy, in our opinion, the world's fastest
momentum algorithm.  We know that it’s a big claim to say that one
particular algo is the absolute fastest, but MacDaddy is - and we will
be surfacing supporting data to validate this claim on our website.
If you have seen any of our videos, you will recall that changes in
price are always preceded by changes in order flow....and that
since all momentum algorithms are predicated on changes in price,
they all fall into the category of 'lagging' indicators.
As MacDaddy is monitoring momentum changes within Order Flow,
it is a 'leading' indicator...and as such, will always blow the doors
off of any 'off-the-shelf' momentum indicators such as RSI,
Momentum, MACD, etc.
WIND [Weiss-InterMarket-Neutrality-Detector] - WIND looks at a lot
of order flow data across many, many markets. As it reads through
this data it tries to deduce whether their is synchronicity amongst
program trades across the bulk of these markets.  By 9:45 a.m.
WIND can frequently tell a trader what direction (Long Only, Short
Only, Scalp or Short Swing in Either Direction) they should set their
trades in for the day
